USW Local 7600 Holds a Much Needed Vigil in Memory of George Floyd

Tuesday, June 9, 2020

USW Local 7600 organized and hosted a vigil to promote unity and solidarity against the systemic and racial injustices our nation is currently facing, including the recent tragic killing of George Floyd. Political leaders, union members, and community members gathered to pay respects and protest the senseless killing of innocent Black lives. The crowd united in chants of "No justice, no peace," and the powerful phrase "Black Lives Matter" echoed among all present.

Despite the short notice, the urgency to support this vigil drew nearly 100 participants. The event invitation was shared on Saturday, June 6, via social media and through the text blast service to those who subscribed by replying with the keyword (Action). The Action group, created and launched on Thursday, June 4, was also highlighted in USW Local 7600 President Valery Robinson's monthly email. Union members subscribed to the Action group will be invited to participate in future events that call for unity and solidarity. Upcoming actions include sending letters to community leaders, such as our recent demand for PPEs for healthcare workers. Currently, 75 union members are signed up. • The event commenced at 7:00 PM with Contract Specialist Joel Maya welcoming and thanking all attendees, emphasizing the critical need for unity and solidarity during these challenging times.
  • Contract Specialist Gina Hamilton introduced Bishop Cecil A. Richardson, who led the group in a heartfelt prayer.
  • John Tillar, Director of the Southern California Region for the Alliance of Healthcare Unions, delivered a powerful and moving speech that resonated deeply with the audience.

The vigil concluded with a breathtaking performance by recording artist Nickie King. USW Local 7600 President Valery Robinson concluded the event by expressing gratitude to all attendees, including USW Local 7600 Vice President Liz Cuevas.
