Announcing the 2025 Philip Murray Memorial Scholarships
The United Steelworkers District 12 is proud to offer the Philip Murray Memorial Scholarships, with each award valued at $1,500. These scholarships are available for the 2025 academic year to children, stepchildren, or legal wards of active members of local unions affiliated with the Scholarship and Existence Fund, USW District 12.
Eligibility Criteria:
- Applicants must be graduating high school in 2025 with a GPA of 2.75 or higher.
- They must be planning to attend an accredited college, university, vocational, or technical institution in the United States or Canada.
Scholarship Allocation by Sub-District:
- Sub-District 1 (Southern California, Arizona, Nevada): 7 awards
- Sub-District 2 (Northern California, Colorado, New Mexico, Utah): 4 awards
- Sub-District 3 (Oregon, Alaska, Hawaii, Washington, Idaho): 4 awards
Application Process:
- Fill out and submit the attached application form, including the signature of the member’s local union financial secretary.
- Write a 300-500 word essay on "What effect does a strong labor movement have on the working class in a democratic society?"
- Mail the completed application, essay, and high school transcript by April 15, 2025, to the scholarship committee at the respective address for your sub-district.
Award Conditions:
Scholarship recipients will receive funds for tuition, fees, and books, up to a maximum of $1,500. Payment will be made upon presentation of the recipient’s acceptance letter from their chosen educational institution. Awards must be claimed by December 31, 2025; otherwise, they will become invalid.
