General

What is a strike?

A strike is when union workers collectively refuse to work to show the employer our power.

How much notice must we give?

Ten days, as required by law in healthcare.

How is a strike determined?

Only a vote of the USW membership can authorize a strike.

What kind of issues could lead to a strike?

Unacceptable proposals from Kaiser on staffing, wages, or benefits, or unlawful conduct.

What would be expected of me if the Union calls a strike?

Not crossing the picket line, walking the line daily, attending rallies, and participating in union actions. Being on strike is not a vacation — it’s about fighting for a fair contract.


STRIKE FAQ

When would a strike start?

We could begin a strike any time after our national and local contracts expire. We would provide the Hospital with ten days’ notice before any strike would begin.

How long would a strike last?

As long as necessary to win the contract we deserve.

Who would go on strike?

Any strike would involve members of USW Local 7600 and our Alliance of Health Care Unions partners.

Can I strike off and on?

No.

If the Union calls a strike, can I be fired for striking?

No. Striking is a legally protected right. You can only face discipline for misconduct on the picket line (e.g., violence, threats, or property damage).

Where can I get a copy of our contract?

What about the Strike and Defense Fund?

The USW Strike and Defense Fund provides support for members and their families. Members can apply for assistance beginning in the fourth week of a strike.


PICKETING FAQ

Where would I go to picket if the Union calls a strike?

You would go to your work site unless you were told a different location.

I work from home. Where would I go?

You would receive a text message from the union about your picket line assignment. If you were unsure, you would go to the closest medical center.

What time would I show up to picket?

Picketing times would be decided by the picket committee. Stay tuned for shifts when and if a strike comes.

Where would I report if the clinic where I work is closed?

We would reassign members to the closest picket location if their worksite is closed.

Anything I need to know about going to a picket line?

Picket lines show the community and Kaiser our solidarity and strength. We want them to be organized, disciplined, and family-friendly. Picket Captains would ensure safety, answer questions, and track picketing activity.

Would kids and family members be able to join us?

Yes! Our Community Outreach and Membership Engagement Committee would plan family days on the picket line.

If the Union calls a strike, would I be able to park at KP’s parking lot for a picket?

No. Picket captains would identify alternative parking options.

What would be provided on the picket line?

Portable toilets, water, and snacks would be provided.

Can I show up to picket if I’m on Paid Family Leave?

We would not want you to compromise your leave. You could assist in other ways by filling out our strike duty survey.


TRANSITION FAQ

What if I’m on shift when a strike begins?

You would clock out at the start time of the strike and join your union family on the picket line. You would follow all normal clock-out procedures.

Would I need to give my supervisor notice?

No. The Union would give Kaiser proper notice to strike.

Can I show up before the official strike start time?

No. Legally any picket would begin at the official strike start time.


JOB-RELATED FAQ

What would happen if I have surgery or medical needs and the Union calls a strike?

The Assistance Committee would be able to help you review options.

What if I’m asked to train replacement staff?

Do not be insubordinate, but report the issue to the Union immediately.

What if my vacation or leave day is canceled during a strike?

Report this to the union.

What about Ben Hudnall benefits?

We expect these benefits would continue, but school-paid hours would not.

What would I do if I’m on sick leave, workers comp, or FMLA and the Union calls a strike?

You would continue your leave and benefits. You would not report to picket duty, but you would still be able support in other ways.

I’m on probation. Can I strike?

Yes, if the Union calls a strike. Probationary employees have the same legal protections.

Would Local 7600 officers be paid during a strike?

No. Officers and grievance reps would not receive union pay during a strike.
